A 56-meter sailboat carrying many tourists sank off the coast of Sicily early this morning. 15 of them were rescued from the boat, and a large-scale search operation was launched for seven. Authorities later announced that one person had been found dead.
The accidents, which happened at around 5 am near the Sicilian port town of Porticello, were caused by extremely bad weather conditions. More precisely, the sailboat named Bayesian, which according to the latest information was still anchored in the harbor, is said to have sunk due to a water plume. This is what one of the witnesses explained to the Italian news agency Ansa. It is believed that the vessel’s mast could be torn off in a storm.

Meanwhile, divers have already located the wreckage of the sailboat, which is located at a depth of approximately 50 meters. Meanwhile, the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reports that one person has been found dead and that the search is on for the remaining six. The body of a man was found not far from the yacht. The newspaper also reports that rescuers managed to rescue a barely one-year-old girl from the yacht. The rest of the missing are believed to be in the boat and already dead. According to unofficial information, the divers who went down to the sunken sailboat should have seen bodies through the lines. A one-year-old girl named Sophiewho was rescued from the vessel together with her mother, landed in the pediatric clinic and is in good health. The survivors were rescued from the yacht by the crew members of the Dutch vessel, which was anchored in the immediate vicinity of the yacht.
The yacht Bayesian sailed under the British flag. According to the Italian Coast Guard, there were 10 crew members and 12 passengers on board. Among them are British, American and Canadian citizens, as well as a New Zealander, an Irishman, a Sri Lankan and two people with British-French citizenship.
According to the news agency Reuters, the sailing ship left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on August 14, and on Sunday evening it was located east of Palermo and then anchored in Porticello. “The wind was extremely strong. We expected bad weather, but not that bad,” explained one of the Coast Guardsmen.
