The snowfall that started in the central states of the United States over the weekend reached the capital on Monday morning, where more than 20 centimeters of snow fell. As of noon local time Monday, more than 800 flights were canceled and many delayed at Washington’s two main airports. An additional 300 flights were affected at nearby Baltimore International Airport due to the weather. At Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, 730 flights were canceled or delayed. A record snowfall was measured at the Cincinnati airport, approaching 20 centimeters, resulting in the cancellation of dozens of flights.
The winter weather caused hundreds of accidents on the roads of Indiana and Virginia. The Indiana State Police reported 259 crashes and 271 cars that ran off the road on their social media pages. In addition, the patrols provided assistance to around 100 vehicles stuck in the snow. More than 150 accidents were reported in the area of the state capital, Indianapolis, among which dozens of people were injured. In the state of Virginia, almost 250 collisions have already been reported by state police in the early hours of Monday morning. Due to the extreme winter weather, schools in many states have been closed, including most of Maryland, as well as parts of Virginia and Kentucky.
The snowfall most severely affected the states of Kansas, Missouri, Indiana, Virginia and Maryland, as well as Washington, the capital. The thickest layer of snow has formed in Kansas, where about 40 centimeters of snow has fallen since Sunday. Hundreds of thousands of customers were without power in areas affected by the storm, primarily in Kentucky, Indiana and Virginia, as of midday Monday local time as power lines were downed by the weight of the thick layer of ice.
An unusually cold weather warning was issued in some parts of the state of Texas on Monday, so the city of Houston was alerted to sub-freezing temperatures.
