A year later, the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza is of biblical proportions

CairoThe collective punishment inflicted by the Israeli army on the Gaza Strip has reached an unprecedented scale. The bombs began to fall on October 7 itself – hours after Hamas launched its attack on communities near the Strip, which killed 1,200 people and ended up with 300 kidnapped – and have not stopped doing so since then day and night Israel has missiles and bombs with enough power to go through buildings, as they are designed to try to penetrate the network of tunnels that Hamas has underground. That is why the degree of devastation is brutal, with entire neighborhoods wiped out and a population that no longer has anywhere to take refuge.

The figures of the devastation leave no room for doubt: life in Gaza today is hell. And not only because of the number of dead, which already rises above 41,600, but because of the humanitarian catastrophe situation in which the survivors live. The 2.2 million Palestinians who live in this open-air prison have almost all become internally displaced, in a space that has similar dimensions to the Maresme region. 96% of the population is at risk of malnutrition, because, as governments such as Egypt have denounced, Israel is using hunger as a weapon of war. Humanitarian aid trickles in due to the blockade maintained by Israel. The bombings have destroyed the health infrastructure, and diseases that were eradicated, such as polio, have re-emerged. And repeated military attacks on schools and hospitals have left a collapsed health system unable to cope with the magnitude of the disaster.
