A zookeeper was mauled to death by a lion in Nigeria

The victim, a 35-year-old man, worked at the Presidential Library Wildlife Park, owned by former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.

The spokesperson of the local police, Omolola Odutola, said that “the lion caused serious and fatal injuries to the man’s neck”, according to the BBC.

He said the lion was then shot to “free its owner”.

The zookeeper would have taken some guests to see the lion’s feeding routine on Saturday evening. Apparently, the zookeeper, feeling comfortable with the animal, left the protective gate open and began feeding the animal. He was mutilated by the animal and died on the spot.

The incident comes less than a year after another zookeeper was attacked and killed by a lion at Obafemi Awolowo University, also in southwestern Nigeria.
