After his death, the famous Slovak football goalkeeper of Sparta and Slavia, Miroslav Kováč, was buried together with the homeless and people whom no one showed interest in. The funeral was held on Tuesday, while Kováč died two years ago.
Miroslav Kováč, former football player of Sparta and Slavia Prague, Tatran Prešov, Magnezita Jelšava and Partizan Bardejov, died two years ago at the age of 64. But his urn was placed in a common grave with 48 other people only on Tuesday. reported Novy czam.
Kováč came from central Slovakia, but his football talent took him to the famous big clubs in Prague. After years spent in the Czech capital, he transferred to Tatran Prešov and finished his career in Partizan Bardejov.
He then worked as a goalkeeper coach, a janitor at a secondary vocational school in Prešov and also as a maintenance worker in a boarding house.
However, he did not maintain much contact with his relatives and died during the coronavirus pandemic.
Kováč’s teammate and friend from Tatran Prešov Vladimír Gombár and other former players of the club tried to organize a dignified funeral, but two years ago they failed.
“We knew that he had died. As old internationals, we were interested in taking care of Mir after his death. But then we were told that there were relatives here, so all the legal requirements had to be met.
There was nothing we could do about it. I didn’t even know he was buried until now. I thought that perhaps relatives took his remains to Žilina, where he came from,” he revealed.
Similar funerals are said to be organized by the city of Prešov approximately once every ten years.
