About 30% of breakdancers suffer from a rare condition

A team of doctors has discovered a rare condition specific to breakdancers, called “headspin hole”, writes Science Alert, citing The Conversation.

This involves the formation of a conical mass on the top of the scalp, caused by repeated trauma generated by the spinning movements of the head, a technique often seen in breakdancing.

Symptoms may include hair loss and, in some cases, pain around the growth.

About 30% of breakdancers reported inflammation and hair loss

A 2024 medical report details the case of a 19-year-old breakdancer who was diagnosed with the condition. Doctors explain that constant trauma causes the connective tissue layer on the scalp that protects the bones of the skull to thicken.

About 30% of breakdancers blamed inflammation and hair loss caused by the headspin technique. In addition, they are prone to other injuries, including wrist, knee and spine problems, due to the complex movements they perform.

However, “headspin hole” is not the most serious injury that dancers can suffer, most of the time they are serious fractures with little chance of full recovery.
