American skier Lindsey Vonn will return to the competitive slopes after more than five years since the end of her active career.
The three-time Olympic medalist and four-time World Cup winner joined Team USA at the age of 40. She could restart her career already in the first speed races of the 14-15 season. December at the home slope in Beaver Creek.
Vonn announced the end of her career in February 2019 and cited numerous injuries as the reason. However, this year she appeared on the slopes in New Zealand and also trained on the glacier in Sölden, fueling speculation that she could be making a comeback.
“My goal is to enjoy it and hopefully this journey will take me to a World Cup race. I wouldn’t be back on the US team if I didn’t have an intention. I’m looking forward to returning and being able to continue sharing my knowledge of this sport with incredible female skiers,” Vonn was quoted as saying by olympics.com.
During 19 seasons in the World Cup, she stood on the podium 137 times. She is the owner of four large crystal globes for the overall championship, she won another sixteen small ones for triumphs in the season ranking of downhill (8), super-G (5) and super combined (3).
She won one gold and two bronze medals at the Olympics, the last one she won in PyeongChang 2018. She almost missed those too due to health problems. She finished the World Championships with eight medals, two of which were gold. Coincidentally, the first and the last are connected by the Swedish center of Are.
In total, she won 82 races in the SP, which was a record until 2023, surpassed only by her compatriot Mikaela Shiffrinová. So far, the last race of her career was on the ground of the world championship and she said goodbye by winning the bronze in the downhill.
