The busy Chittagong-Anwara Banshkhali Regional Highway has become extremely slippery due to the melted (released) water due to the transport of salt by open trucks.
Those concerned said that the accidents have increased due to the slippery roads during the transportation of salt by hundreds of trucks from the coastal areas every day without any protection.
Accidents keep happening at different points of the upazila. In addition to the loss of life of at least 4 people, many people were injured. These informations are known from Banskhali police sources.
70 percent of the recent accidents were due to road slicks in salt water. Informing this information, the local conscious citizens said, it is clear to see at night and day, the bitumen highway has become extremely slippery due to the salt water melted from the truck during transportation.
The vehicle is thrown off the highway by pressing the brakes a little. Last Thursday at 5:30 PM, five motorcycles met with an accident due to salt water within 10 minutes in Bhasania shop area of Kalipur Union of upazila.
Seven people were seriously injured, among them a journalist named Jamal Uddin. Later the locals rescued him and took him to a local hospital as the injuries were serious and he was referred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Chittagong South Division Executive Engineer Pintu Chakma said that during transportation by open trucks, the bitumen carpeting coating is also coming off as salt water is released and falls directly on the road.
The lower layer of bitumen is severely damaged and the lifespan of the road is reduced. Even though a letter has been sent to the concerned local administration to take necessary measures on behalf of the road department, no work is being done.
In this regard, Upazila Assistant Commissioner Bhumi Jasim Uddin said that a meeting will be held soon with those related to salt farming. So that salt cannot be transported in any condition without triplet.
