The decision of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to stop the transit of natural gas through Ukraine significantly damages Slovakia and causes billions in damage to the entire EU. If there is no change, Slovakia will take reciprocal measures, Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer) reiterated the position of the Slovak government in a phone call with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The Government Office of the Slovak Republic informed about this on Friday.

“Based on the request of the German side, I had a phone call with Federal Chancellor Scholz this afternoon. The topic was gas supplies and transit. Without publishing the statements of Olaf Scholz, I repeated the principled positions of the Slovak government to the Federal Chancellor. Zelensky’s decision to stop gas transit through Ukraine significantly damages Slovakia and causes billions of dollars in damage to the entire European Union. Unless there is a change in President Zelensky’s decision, Slovakia will take reciprocal measures,” said Fico.

As the government office added, the prime minister also informed the German chancellor of his proposal to hold negotiations with Zelensky on Tuesday (January 21) at the World Economic Forum in Davos. According to Fico, the Ukrainian president has not yet responded to this offer. “Our meeting in Davos can crack the future of Slovak-Ukrainian relations,” the prime minister added.
