According to him, the members of his party in the Slovak parliament will not support Kyiv’s entry into the alliance.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said at the ongoing summit of the organization, which is also attended by representatives of Slovakia, that the North Atlantic Alliance wishes Ukraine to become a member.
“I understand Ukraine’s wishes. But Ukraine’s membership in NATO is only a guarantee of the third world war. To be honest, even without Ukraine’s membership in NATO, we are not far from it, if we look at how some advanced democracies are under fire,” Fico said in recordingswhich he published on the social network.
Fico also claimed that he had asked Slovakia’s foreign and defense ministers to insist at the NATO summit that Ukraine’s NATO membership would only be possible if the national parliaments of the alliance’s member states agreed to it and if all conditions were met.
On Wednesday, Stoltenberg called Ukraine’s path to the alliance “irreversible”. At the summit in Washington, NATO member countries also adopted a joint declaration, which, among other things, promises further support for Ukraine, which has been resisting Russian military invasion for over two years.
The current Fico government, after taking office last year, stopped military aid to Kyiv from the state reserves. Fico has also previously argued that Western countries’ strategy regarding Ukraine has failed and that Russia cannot be defeated in a conventional war.
