The Republican Party will retain its current majority in the US House of Representatives. This follows from the forecasts of American television channels CNN and NBC News published on Wednesday after more than a week of vote counting. After the Senate and the White House, the Republicans will probably control the lower house of the US Congress.
The victory of the Republicans in the congressional elections to the House was predicted earlier. According to the latest projections, they will also win two seats in the states of Arizona and California, giving them at least the 218 seats needed for the majority in the 435-member House, which they have held since last year. So far, CNN attributes 208 seats to the Democratic Party.
In last week’s elections, Republicans also won the majority (53) of seats in the US Senate, the upper chamber of Congress, where until then they had only a minority status. On Wednesday, they elected South Dakota Senator John Thun to replace Mitch McConnell as their new majority leader by secret ballot.
With the control of both legislative chambers by the Republican Party, according to NBC, the newly elected US President Donald Trump will get all the tools of power in Washington.
Trump defeated Democrat and outgoing US Vice President Kamala Harris in the November 5 presidential election. He won all seven key states, as well as the national electorate — leading Harris by 3.2 million votes, according to preliminary results.
