Accused of killing ex-girlfriend in Matosinhos says he had a “blank mind” about the crime – Portugal

The man accused of running over and killing his ex-girlfriend in June, in Matosinhos, admitted this Wednesday in court that he only remembers directing the car towards her and that, from then on, he had “a blank slate”.

“The only memory I have is of going (with the car) towards her (ex-girlfriend) and, from then on, I don’t remember anything else”, said the 43-year-old defendant, before the panel of judges at the Court of Matosinhos, in the district of Porto.

During his testimony, the alleged killer, who at the time of the crime was on parole after being convicted of killing an ex-girlfriend with a knife, said that he met the fatal victim in 2022, through a dating app, and that they started dating that year, and the relationship, which lasted until 2024, was always troubled.

At the end of March 2024, the 37-year-old fatal victim blocked him on social media and sent a message saying she didn’t want any more contact, he stressed.

Then, he continued, he realized that he had a new boyfriend with whom he was already living.

The defendant said that, on the day of the crime, on June 6, he drove to her house and, when he saw her leave, he honked at her to call her and talk to her, but she continued at a fast pace.

“Bewildered, I decided to go after her in the car and I felt very angry because she was ignoring me”, he clarified.

Afterwards, he added, he turned the car towards his ex-girlfriend and from then on he didn’t remember anything else, claiming to have had “a white girl”.

“It all happened very quickly,” he said.

When asked by the panel of judges if he wanted to kill her, the defendant responded by saying that he wanted to hurt her and that he then intended to commit suicide.

The prosecution highlighted that on June 6, the accused, who is in preventive detention, went in his car to his ex-partner’s place of work, in Matosinhos, waited for her to get out and start walking along the sidewalk.

The woman was walking when he “accelerated strongly”, went up the sidewalk and crashed the car into her, throwing her onto the road, he added.

“Then, seven times (in advances and retreats) the accused passed the vehicle’s wheels over the victim’s body, with particular focus on the head region, causing his death,” the indictment described.

However, added the Public Prosecutor’s Office, when surprised by a member of the public who came to the woman’s aid, the accused decided to continue the march, invade the opposite lane of traffic and go against the man, only not hitting him because he managed to jump into the middle of two parked cars.

Admitting that he did not know how he carried out the maneuvers described in the indictment, the accused highlighted that the “only ‘flash'” he has in his memory is seeing a man making signs at him.

As the defense asked for a psychiatric examination to be carried out at the Legal Medical Institute (IML), the alleged killer ended his testimony by saying that he was very sorry for what he did and, as a result, had to take several anxiolytics.

“I feel very strong pain for the suffering I caused,” he concluded.

The parents of the fatal victim are asking for compensation of R$400,000.
