Acer push-button phones. Design, ease of use

Hello.

Acer unexpectedly released push-button phones; almost all devices from three lines appeared in Russian retail. The segment of push-button phones is traditionally considered something from a past life, because everyone today has one or another smartphone, such devices have a large touch screen. A push-button phone differs from smartphones in that it only has buttons and no touch screen. Many sincerely believe that push-button phones have become an endangered species, but every year in Russia alone they are sold in the amount of several million units. The “button” does not lose its position, and the reason for this is the unique characteristics of such models – they are inexpensive, work on a single battery charge for weeks, you can dial a number or take a call with gloves on and in any conditions, it does not matter whether it is raining or It’s bitterly cold.

Talk about what buy such devices Only older people are not allowed. For many parents, choosing a feature phone for a child is an opportunity to protect him from playing games on a smartphone. Later, of course, they will give such a device as a gift, but the first phone is a “button”. In the corporate segment, push-button phones are popular with couriers, drivers, and restaurant managers. In a word, wherever it is convenient not to think about the battery charge and you need to answer calls and occasionally make calls yourself, the simpler the better. Let’s add here fishermen, hunters, everyone who goes on hikes; they take such devices as spare ones, just in case. The smartphone may run out of charge at the most inopportune moment, but the “button” will work all this time. Plus, in many parts of our vast homeland, smartphones turn into smart bricks, since only a 2G network is available, there is no mobile Internet.

On store shelves, push-button phones are usually presented as first-price devices, models that are trying to be made as cheap as possible. Your own chargers, incompatible with the cables you already have, crunchy plastic that you saved on. The price justifies such devices, and those people who are looking for something more interesting are often forced to search the Internet for various offers. Acer decided to release almost a dozen models, which they divided into three lines.

The names of the lines are as follows: Disco, Twist, Jive. Associations with energetic dancing bring to mind that these phones will work and run on a single charge. In practice this is exactly the case. But first, let’s look at the common features of all models, since they de facto use the same platform.

Let me start with the fact that each device has a 3.5 mm jack, you can connect wired headphones (they are not included, but this is good, you can choose the ones you like, including not earplugs for 100 rubles, but something better ). Interestingly, these push-button phones sound good; you can load podcasts, music onto a microSD memory card and listen to them on the road or somewhere in a tent on a winter lake while you fish. Unlike smartphones, here you are provided with dozens of hours of listening. If you want to listen to the built-in FM radio, you can do it without headphones, in hands-free mode. There is only one speaker, but it is loud enough for you to hear radio broadcasts.

For those who are accustomed to using wireless headphones, there are also no restrictions; you can connect them to phones and enjoy all the benefits of civilization.

Another important point is the charger connector; USB Type C is used here. The kit includes a charger with a permanent cable.

But if you went somewhere and forgot to charge, then any USB Type C cable will do; just connect it to an external battery or laptop, and charging will start. You are not limited to only native charging, as is the case with many first-price feature phones. And additional features of this kind are a wonderful thing, because you do not depend on your forgetfulness, your phone will receive energy anywhere.

Same platform, but how do the phone lines differ? The answer is obvious, they have different designs.

In the Disco line we see a monolithic plastic body; it is glossy, gray in color and most closely resembles modern smartphones.

Even the SIM card slot is designed similarly to smartphones, and comes with a “clip” to pull out the slot.

And here we see support for two nanoSIM cards (there are no problems with moving the card from the smartphone or back at the right time), as well as space for a memory card. Traditionally for feature phones, all Acer devices support memory cards up to 32 GB; this memory will be enough for hundreds of hours of music and podcasts. And here you can store the files you need without the risk of someone remotely hacking your device and stealing them. Some people use feature phones and memory cards to store sensitive information.

The principle of constructing each line is simple. Younger models have a small screen, for example, Disco DS17 has a 1.77-inch diagonal TN matrix. The Disco DS24 and DS35 have screen diagonals of 2.4 and 3.5 inches, respectively. The screens are bright and the fonts are easy to read.

Screen resolution also varies depending on the diagonal – 128×160 pixels, 240×320 pixels, 320×480 pixels. It is clear that the higher the resolution and the larger the diagonal, the easier it is to read the text on the screen.

Another point is the built-in memory, by default we see 32 MB of RAM, 32 MB of internal memory (this is if you do not use a memory card). All models with a 3.5-inch screen diagonal have 64 MB of RAM and 128 MB of internal memory – this underlines their high status in each line.

It is clear that as the diagonal increases, the keyboard also changes, since the case is larger, the size of the keyboard also increases. Each of the phones has a built-in flashlight, a universal solution.

I think you guessed another change: the larger the device, the larger the installed battery. Let’s look at this parameter using the example of three devices from the Disco line – 700, 1300, 1800 mAh. Standby time is 210, 390 and 405 hours, respectively.

The weight of the devices varies – 80, 96 and 130 grams, even the largest phone is not huge at all, especially compared to modern smartphones. Having familiarized ourselves with the principle of constructing the line, let’s take a look at the Twist family (these models will appear on sale a little later). The peculiarity of these devices is that among all Acer push-button phones they have the longest operating time.

A different design, a removable back cover that gives access to the battery (can be easily replaced), as well as the memory card and SIM cards. The beauty of this solution is that you don’t need a paperclip to remove the SIM card or memory card.

The third line is Jive, a dance that is well known to the older generation, but young people may not remember it. This line has a feature – an SOS button, which allows you to call a pre-set number; there are two models – JV24 and JV32.

So if you need a feature phone for an elderly person, then look at the Jive series. Perhaps such a simple device will appeal to your older relatives.

There is one difference in the JV32 model – the screen here is brighter than on other devices, and it is an IPS matrix. For older people, such a bright screen can be an important element of the phone.

It’s good that the case in the Jive line is also collapsible, while the coating of the case is velvety, it’s pleasant to hold it in your hands.

All devices, without exception, work only in 2G networks, bands 850/900/1800/1900, in contrast to first-price phones, where there are usually only two bands – 900/1800. And this allows you to roam with such phones, of course, if other countries still have 2G networks (in some places they have already been turned off, but in most countries of the world they exist).

Cost of feature phones from Acer starts from 2490 rublesfor this money you get nice, well-built models that have everything you could expect from a feature phone. There is nothing superfluous here, for example, there is no Wi-Fi, and why is it needed in a push-button device? Phones for life, bright and pleasant to use. At the same time, they are easy to use in everyday tasks, and most importantly, they have loud calls and a sensitive vibration motor. It is difficult to miss a call on such a phone.

These models are not positioned as offering first price, but they do not look like cheap devices, they have a certain style, that same brightness. These are nice devices, which means we can recommend them for purchase to those who are willing to pay a little more, but get an interesting design, many small but important improvements in both design and software.
