Acting President Choi Sang-mok said on the 10th, “If the medical community participates in dialogue and discusses, we will be able to flexibly discuss the scale of expansion of medical school seats in 2026 from a zero base.”
Acting President Choi said this at the ‘Meeting on Solutions to Major Issues’ (Social Sector 1) presided over at the Seoul Government Complex on this day, saying, “The government once again proposes participation in dialogue with the medical community.” He said, “In addition to the supply and demand outlook, we will take into account the fact that the majority of students were unable to participate in classes last year and the on-site educational conditions at each school.”
While reaffirming his commitment to medical reform, Acting President Choi said, “I am sorry that the public is experiencing worry and inconvenience as the departure of resident teachers has continued since the announcement of an increase in the number of medical schools in February of last year.” He added, “I am sorry for the doctors and nurses who protect the field even in difficult times.” “I would also like to express my gratitude to all medical personnel,” he said.
Regarding the residents and medical students, he said, “I feel sorry and sorry for the residents who have put aside their dream of dedicating themselves to medicine and are contemplating their career path, as well as the professors and medical students who must have been worried about education and class issues.”
Acting Choi ordered related ministries, including the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Military Manpower Administration, led by Deputy Prime Minister Lee Joo-ho, to actively review related measures to allow residents and medical students to return.
Acting President Choi emphasized, “In the process of promoting medical reform, we will not neglect efforts to persuade and consult with those who have different opinions.” At the same time, he requested, “The medical community also actively participate in discussions on medical reform that strengthens essential and local medical care for the people and in dialogue to normalize medical care.”
