Activision is gagging players. Censorship in Call of Duty continues

Activision fights toxic behavior. To do this, they employed artificial intelligence that flags harmful content.

Malicious people will say that the biggest problem in multiplayer games is other players. This is partly true, because in such games we are not responsible for our success, but it also depends on our companions. It is known that there are worse matches when nothing works, but receiving insults or even threats does not motivate you to play better. Developers at Activision are starting to understand this problem and are even taking steps to combat toxic behavior.

Artificial intelligence will censor Call of Duty players

The video game sector is increasingly turning to artificial intelligence technologies to improve various aspects of gameplay. In recent months, the use of AI in moderating voice chats in popular online games, such as Call of Duty. According to Activision Blizzard, since the beginning of 2024, toxic behavior in voice chats in this game series has decreased by 43%. This is due to the introduced AI-based moderation system, called ToxMod.

ToxMod was first introduced in November 2023 with its launch Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. This system analyzes voice chat transcripts, detecting keywords based on various factors. Moreover, it can distinguish innocent jokes (so-called trashtalk) from aggressive harassment by monitoring players’ reactions, emotions and compliance with the game code. ToxMod also assesses the age and gender of the speaker and addressee to better understand the context of the conversation.

While ToxMod does not issue penalties itself, it can quickly report rule violations to human moderators. Only they decide to warn, mute the player or impose a ban after repeated offenses. As a result, the number of players who break the rules again has decreased by as much as 67% in games Modern Warfare III i Warzone since the improvements were introduced in June 2024. In July alone, 80% of players caught violating the rules did not commit further offenses.

ToxMod currently works in all regions except Asia, supporting voice chat in English, Spanish and Portuguese. With the premiere Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 On October 25, 2024, Activision plans to expand support to include French and German. At the same time, text chats and usernames are moderated by the partner Community Sifthas been expanded from 14 to 20 languages.
