How do external SSDs with different paper speeds compare in practice?
Does it even make sense to buy an external HDD today? Maybe if you have tens of TB of data and just need to store it, but for example even a professional photographer or videographer will already appreciate the speed of external SSD drives. The same applies to ordinary users who need to transfer data more often, the transfer speeds of external SSDs are an order of magnitude higher than HDDs and the prices are not too high.
Today we will take a look at the current offer of external SSD drives from the company ADATA, which includes three product lines from compact “flash drives” through powerful middle class to the currently fastest external drive on the market with USB4. Of course, all drives can be purchased in multiple memory options, so you can easily choose between storage capacity and speed.
The smallest of the disks ADATA SC750 it looks like a flash drive, but it’s a fast external SSD. You can buy it with a capacity of 500 GB, 1000 GB and 2000 GB at the prices of CZK 1,249, CZK 1,999 and CZK 3,699. All this when connected via the USB 3.2 Gen2 standard with a maximum write and read speed of 1000 MB/s. In all cases, this is the cheapest SSD for the given capacity compared to the competition on Alge.
Medium SSD ADATA SE880 it is already a classic external SSD disk, so it is connected via a cable. Variants of 500 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB are available at prices of 1499 CZK, 2399 CZK, 4084 CZK and 8867 CZK. USB 3.2 Gen2×2 is used for connection, and ADATA is again the cheapest in every price category when we look only at drives with this interface.
ADATA SE920 is external storage for connoisseurs, as the only SSD sold in the Czech Republic that offers a USB4 interface, it adds its own active cooling and high transfer speeds. Three memory variants are available – 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB at prices of CZK 4,399, CZK 6,799 and CZK 11,490. These prices are higher and there is no competition yet, so it is not clear how other discs will move in price.
All three series differ mainly in speed and appearance, we will describe them in detail and measure them in the next chapters.
