Flappy Bird is an inconspicuous arcade game that was once one of the most popular games available on the App Store. In 2014, its creator rather unexpectedly decided to remove it from the store. Now, however, it has been announced that the title will return to iOS.
Flappy Bird was a ridiculously simple game in which the player’s task was to control the titular bird in such a way that it flew as far as possible without crashing into any obstacles along the way. Controls came down to touching the screen when you wanted your pet to rise up, and releasing it to start falling. Despite its simple premise, the game was characterized by a fairly high level of difficulty, which contributed to its enormous popularity.
The original version was removed from the App Store in 2014. Its creator, independent Vietnamese developer Dong Nguyen, explained his decision by saying he was simply tired of the media frenzy it caused and didn’t like the effect it had on people. He claimed that he wanted his games to be relaxing entertainment, not something dangerously addictive.
The Flappy Bird Foundation is responsible for Flappy Bird’s return to the App Store, having managed to obtain the rights to the brand. Everything indicates that Nguyen is not involved in this project. Interestingly, one of the members of The Flappy Bird Foundation is Kek, an independent developer who previously accused Flappy Bird of being a clone of his 2011 game Piou Piou.
The new version of Flappy Bird, in addition to the content known from the original, will also offer new elements such as additional levels, characters and game modes. Everything indicates that it will also introduce micropayments. The premiere of the iOS version is to take place in 2025.
