It took nearly 20 hours to rescue a Tasmanian kayaker trapped between rocks on the Franklin River. In the end, the 60-year-old’s life was saved by amputating his leg on the spot.

The 60-year-old’s agony began early Friday afternoon when he lost control of his kayak and became trapped between rocks on the Franklin River. Soon, emergency services received an alert from his smart watch, and emergency services were dispatched to the field.

The rescue was especially challenging because it is a remote area of the rocky part of the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, which is very popular with kayakers and rafters.

The rescuers unsuccessfully tried to rescue the unfortunate man, whose leg got stuck between the rocks, but after several hours spent in the water, and due to the deterioration of the 60-year-old’s health, they decided to amputate his leg in agreement with him. The man was then airlifted to hospital in Hobart and remains in a critical condition.
