GamesIndustry.biz reported that VFX studio Axis has closed in Scotland after 24 years of operation. Its name will probably mean nothing to the average gamer, but the game trailers released by the company are known to many.
Axis Studios is best known for the cinematic announcement trailer for the original Dead Island, which rewinds the dramatic events of a less-than-successful family vacation.
The three-minute trailer (watch it in upscaled 4K here) captivated gamers and critics alike, and won an award at the 2011 Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity.
Axis Studios’ other projects include trailers for Halo 5: Guardians, Gears 5, Deathloop, League of Legends: Wild Rift, Magic: The Gathering, and Warframe, as well as work on the anthology series Love, Death & Robots and the Doctor Who series.
Axis Studios was founded in 2000 and was based in Glasgow, Scotland. When it closed on July 15, 2024, the studio had 162 employees, all of whom were eventually laid off.
Alistair McAlinden, head of corporate restructuring firm Interpath Advisory, regrets that Axis Studios had to close its doors and explains the reasons behind it.
According to McAlinden, Axis Studios has recently faced a decline in partnerships and an increase in labor costs, which has led to serious financial problems that have not been overcome.
