The plan includes the improvement of the existing 72-kilometer route to make it possible speeds of up to 120 km/h, with the reconstruction of bridges, stations and the abolition of 42 road crossings in order to increase security, according to the eKapija portal.

Current infrastructure challenges

The existing railway, which is not electrified, currently allows speeds of up to 40 km/h due to wear and tear. The bridges, designed for a narrow gauge at the beginning of the 20th century, show serious damage, while at several critical points, speeds are limited to only 20 km/h for safety reasons.

Details of modernization

According to the plan, the existing route will be preserved with minimal acquisition of new land. The technical standards foresee an axle load of up to 225kN, which will enable the movement of vehicles with the UIC GC load profile at a speed of up to 120km/h.

The plan also includes the modernization of all 17 existing official positions. Four stations will become intersections, and one will become a stop. Bridges will be rebuilt or replaced, and out of 66 road crossings, 42 will be unique for safety reasons.

It will run daily 8 pairs of regional express trains and 11 pairs of regional passenger trains. Express trains will stop only in Kruševac, Trstenik, Vrnjačka Banja and Kraljevo, while regional passenger trains will stop at 16 stations and stops.

Reorganization of freight traffic is also planned, with two pairs of freight trains per day.

The project includes i construction, adaptation and modernization of several stops and stations which will contribute to better conditions for passengers and the shipment of freight shipments.

Public inspection of the draft plan will last until January 23, 2025.
