The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, will visit Ukraine, the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi has announced.
The announcement comes just weeks after Modi embraced Vladimir Putin during a visit to Russia, India’s traditional ally.
The Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi does not set a date for the visit to Ukraine. But Indian media indicate that it could take place later this week.
Apart from Ukraine, Modi will visit Poland.
During the two-and-a-half-year-long war in Ukraine, Modi has tried to balance India’s long-standing warm relations with Russia, while at the same time seeking stronger security cooperation with the West.
That is why he has on many occasions called on Ukraine and Russia to resolve their conflict through dialogue.
Since Russia attacked Ukraine in February 2022, India’s government has been careful not to directly condemn the assault on the country.
When Modi visited Putin in July, it came just hours after Russia fired rockets at a number of towns in Ukraine, killing over 60 people. Among other things, a children’s hospital in Kyiv was badly damaged.
At the same time, a picture of Modi and Putin in a close embrace in the Russian president’s summer house circulated. A meeting that was condemned by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
