‘AI establishes itself in digital media landscape, trust in X has declined’

Two-thirds of the Dutch population is familiar with AI and knows what you can do with it. A third of the population has used an AI platform. ChatGPT is by far the most used platform and is mainly used by young people. However, 50 percent of 13-34 year olds have not used ChatGPT, according to research by GfK.

AI platforms are mainly used for text (writing, summarizing, improving texts, etc.) and to a much lesser extent for images (photos/pictures) and sound. Also searching for information and inspiration (gathering ideas, brainstorming) are popular.

There is concern about the rise of AI and the use and developments of AI in the future. Often mentioned arguments for this are the increase in fake news or disinformation and that it is not clear whether something is real or created by AI. About the latter, people want clarity with new output.

Although the Dutch are more concerned about the negative consequences of screen time than in 2022, the average duration of use for many online platforms is increasing, according to the same study. The main reasons for media use are that media keep you informed of current affairs and that you are in contact with people you find important, followed by entertainment and relaxation. The majority think that technology makes life easier, but half would still like to have less technology in their lives. It is mainly 18-49 year olds who seem to want less technology, they are also the most concerned about the negative consequences of their screen time on their health and social behavior.

Traditional media such as television and radio still enjoy the most confidence in security around data/personal data, social media the least. When we look at confidence in content, X and TikTok in particular score low, with X having decreased compared to 2022. The transition from Twitter to X has not done the platform any good, with some users having stopped using X due to this lack of confidence.
