‘AI image Northern Lights just as good as a real photo’

Anyone who sacrificed sleep last week to properly photograph the Northern Lights might as well have stayed in bed. According to Meta, AI images of the Northern Lights are just as good as the real photos.

On Threads, people were outraged that Meta posted AI-generated images of the Aurora Borealis. However, it sees this as a great way to show how good AI is. It placed three images: the Northern Lights over the Godlen Gate Bridge, over a city skyline and over a Ferris wheel. It clearly wanted to join the trend of everyone posting these types of images now that they could so easily be taken in places other than the cold north, but that could count on a lot of criticism from followers.

What Meta is particularly blamed for is that it is not about the beautiful picture, it is about the feeling of seeing something beautiful and recording it: an experience that people have lived. Artificial images do not fit in at all, says the public. Some people say, pay attention to the responses you get, while others say, “Oh well, this just shows how terrible AI is.”

‘Use AI in a different way’

There is even an astronomer who gets involved and says that AI should be used differently, for example to use the computing power to give real photos the attention they deserve, or by providing more information about this special phenomenon. All in all, an embarrassing moment for Meta, who does not act on this: the post with the photos is still online.
