Instagram stopped using AI personalities based on MrBeast and Kendall Jenner, but there appear to still be several AI bots on the platform. Users recently discovered that there are fake AI profiles floating around on the social medium and they are not happy about it, to say the least.
What doesn’t help is that they are based on real people, like Jane Austen, who is a cynical writer and storyteller. There are also lesser-known profiles that nevertheless rub people the wrong way. Especially Liv, a ‘proud black queer mother of 2 and a truth-teller’. Carter gives people love and dating advice. The profiles are recognizable as artificial intelligence profiles because they are labeled ‘AI managed by Meta’.
AI profiles on Instagram
There aren’t many AI profiles by Meta. They are also old profiles that were created years ago as an experiment. A not very successful experiment. People talk about blackface by AI, say that they are absolutely not interested in relationship advice from artificial intelligence and the number of followers of the AI profiles is a few thousand each. It is notable that the profiles also do not have an option to block, but Meta says that this is a technical problem and that the profiles are therefore taken offline so that it can be repaired.
The question is whether it will really happen as Meta expects. The company behind Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp believes that in time the AIs will simply be present on social media, just like people’s profiles. “They will have bios and profile photos and can generate and share content using AI. That’s where we see all this going,” says Meta.
Jane Austen on Instagram
Is Meta dead wrong, or is it just too early? In any case, it has found a bridging method. For example, it now lets people create their own AI chatbot that can respond to people. This is also indicated in the profile. This way, the profiles are still human, but AI comes into the mix when it comes to interactions. When and if Liz, Jane Austen and Carter will return is uncertain.
