The airline was established on 28 August 1995 by signing a joint ownership agreement between Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) and the State of Latvia. Air Baltic operations began on 1 October 1995 with the arrival of the first Saab 340 in Riga. In the afternoon of the same day, the plane made Air Baltic’s first passenger flight. Air Baltic is the national airline of Latvia based at Riga International Airport.
