Air from Italy as a souvenir? Cans of Como are a tourist hit

As the spokesman for ItalyComunica argues in an interview with CNN, the latest initiative aims to: “creating a souvenir that tourists could easily carry in a suitcase” and “something original, funny and even provocative.”

However, not everyone agrees with this approach, because the mayor of Como – Alessandro Rapinese – openly admits that although he appreciates the innovative idea, he would prefer that visitors take home other souvenirs, like the silk scarves for which the area has long been famous.

However, it is worth remembering that Davide Abagnale is not the first to decide to earn money this way. As he himself explains, the idea actually came from other places, e.g. Naples, where local air has been sold for years.

In 2020, one company started selling bottles of “authentic” air from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to give people in the UK abroad the scent of home. Tourists can also buy cans of air in Icelandand the Canadian company saw sales skyrocket in 2015 when hundreds of Chinese customers began buying its canned air.
