airBaltic flight cancellations: PTAC clarifies traveler rights

airBaltic announced the cancellation of about 5,000 flights during the summer season. Therefore, the Consumer Advocacy Center (PTAC) reminds passengers of their rights and encourages them to carefully review their options.

If a flight is cancelled, the airline must offer passengers a choice of:

Passengers must follow the instructions provided in the flight cancellation notice and select their preferred option. When you select a new route on the airline’s website, the system will automatically show the nearest available flights. If the proposed options are not suitable, passengers can change the flight date. If there is no suitable solution, it is recommended to contact the airline’s call center.

According to European regulations, an airline is exempt from paying compensation if notification of flight cancellation was given at least 14 days before departure.

Passengers with travel insurance should contact their insurer in the event of losses associated with flight cancellation (for example, due to prepaid hotel or other services). The amount of insurance compensation depends on the terms of the specific insurance policy.

If the airline has not resolved the issue, the passenger has the right to contact PTAC. To do this, you must submit an application with supporting documents, including correspondence with the carrier and copies of tickets.

In 2024, PTAC received 547 air passenger complaints, of which 125 were related to canceled flights. A year earlier, 619 applications were submitted, of which 85 related to flight cancellations.

PTAC urges passengers to be alert and seek prompt assistance if problems arise.
