Thousands of Windows computers around the world in banks, airlines, television stations, supermarkets and many other businesses have today experienced the famous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), and it is the fault of a bad update from the cyber security company CrowdStrike. CrowdStrike’s software, Crowdstrike Falcon, is used by many companies around the world to protect Windows computers and servers.
As reported by The Verge, the problem first appeared in banks, airlines and TV stations in Australia, where thousands of computers entered a loop of constant restarts. However, the problem is now becoming global, as the working day in companies in Europe has begun in earnest.
The British broadcaster Sky News was unable to broadcast news for hours this morning and viewers saw a message in which Sky apologized for the “broadcast interruption”.
Ryanair, one of Europe’s biggest airlines, also says it is facing issues that are completely out of its control, and that booking and check-in are currently not possible, so those traveling today have yet to check-in for their flights. they can do that at the airport.
Neighboring Croatia is also facing numerous problems due to this mistake.
The US Federal Aviation Administration says all Delta, United and American Airlines flights have been canceled due to “communication problems”. Berlin’s Brandenburg Airport is also warning of delays due to “technical issues”. Many emergency service centers in Alaska are also having trouble, and one airline has even turned to handwritten boarding passes.
“We have widespread reports of BSODs on Windows computers,” CrowdStrike said in a message published today. CrowdStrike has identified the issue and pulled the faulty update, but it doesn’t seem to be helping devices that are already affected.
On Reddit, hundreds of IT admins are reporting problems.
“Our entire company is offline,” says one Reddit user, while another says 70 percent of their laptops are down.
CrowdStrike has published instructions to boot affected Windows accounts into Safe Mode or Windows Recovery Environment, and then navigate to the CrowdStrike directory and delete the system file (“C-00000291*.sys”).
It looks like it’s going to be a long day for IT administrators around the world.
