Airports shut down after drone shootings in Moscow

Traffic at two airports near the Russian capital, Moscow, has been suspended on Sunday morning after two drones on their way to the capital were shot down by Russian air defense.

This is stated by Russia’s Federal Aviation Agency according to the news agency Reuters.

This is Domodedovo International Airport, which is one of Russia’s busiest airports. It is located just under an hour’s drive south of inner Moscow.

The other is Zhukovo International Airport. It is smaller than Domodedovo and is located southeast of Moscow.

Traffic is suspended after reports came in that the Russian air defense had been forced to shoot down drones that were heading towards the Russian capital.

Initially, according to Moscow’s mayor, Sergey Shobyanin, there were two drones that had been shot down.

It was later adjusted to four, before the mayor wrote shortly before 07:00 Sunday morning Danish time that another eight drones had been shot down.

It is not yet clear whether the drones have caused serious damage.

According to Sergej Shobyanin, these are Ukrainian drones.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

The war has since centered on eastern Ukraine, but Russia still carries out regular attacks against other parts of the country, including the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.

In late summer, however, Ukraine started a counter-offensive, where Ukrainian soldiers began moving across the border from the Kharkiv region to the Russian region of Kursk.

Since then, Russian and Ukrainian soldiers have been fighting each other not only on Ukrainian territory, but also in Russian.

Ukraine has several times been behind drone attacks against the Russian capital.

In September, Ukraine carried out the largest drone attack on Moscow to date. Russian air defenses had to shoot down 20 Ukrainian drones and about 20 planes had to be diverted to new airports due to the disruption.
