The fire that broke out this afternoon in Alcabideche, in the municipality of Cascais, was declared under control at 7:36 pm, caused 14 minor injuries and forced the removal of 30 horses from an equestrian center, indicated Civil Protection.
The second sub-regional commander of Emergency and Civil Protection for Greater Lisbon, Joaquim Santos, told Lusa that among the injured there are three civilians, due to smoke inhalation.
The other 11 injured are firefighters – one due to illness, one with a leg injury, two with minor burns and the rest due to exhaustion and smoke inhalation.
Although all the injured were taken to hospital, they do not require any care, according to Joaquim Santos.
The flames caused some damage to an equestrian center in Charneca, with firefighters having to remove all of its horses, 30 in total.
No homes in the surrounding area were affected by the fire, which broke out at 12:19 pm in the town of Janas, in the parish of Alcabideche, consuming bushes and forest.
Fighting the flames, made difficult by the wind, mobilized hundreds of operatives from several corporations in Greater Lisbon, supported by elements from the sub-regions of Oeste, Península de Setúbal and Lezíria-Tejo.
Elements of the GNR, PSP, PJ, Cascais Municipal Police, National Institute of Medical Emergencies (INEM) and the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests were involved in the operations.
