Almost 9 out of 10 new cars sold in Norway in 2024 were purely electric. The Tesla Model Y was the most popular new car in Norway.
The Norwegian Road Traffic Information Council (OFV) revealed that 128,691 new vehicles were bought in the country last year. Although this is a relatively small number, 114,400 of the new cars bought in Norway were purely electric.
This means that almost 89% of new cars sold in Norway were zero-emission. OFV says the country is close to achieving its goal of making all new cars sold zero-emission by 2025.
The institution also noted that the percentage of electric vehicles increased from 82.4% in 2023, an already impressive value in itself.
Norwegians prefer electric cars
Moreover, it seems that those who did not switch to a purely electric car opted for other eco-friendly alternatives. We are talking about hybrid models, whose share last year reached 5.3% of all new car sales. Of these, 2.7% were plug-in hybrid models (PHEVs). Of the total of 128,691 new cars sold in Norway, only 986 units were cars equipped with a traditional, petrol engine.
Even though the statistics show that Norwegians have adopted electric cars to a very large extent, the OFV said that “the last percentages to achieve the 2025 target could be difficult to achieve”. The OFV also added that in order to stimulate the adoption of electric cars, the government should focus on benefits such as tax exemption for these vehicles.
The best-selling electric cars in Norway last year were: Tesla Model Y (16,858 units), Tesla Model 3 (7,264 units), Volvo EX30 (7,229), Volkswagen ID.4 (7,222 units) and Toyota bZ4X (6,007 units).
Chinese manufacturers have also increased their presence in this market, accounting for 10% of all new car sales in Norway.
