Exclusive content as far as the eye can see: Streaming services predominantly rely on originals. But licensed titles are far more interesting for the audience. Just a result of a current streaming analysis.
Yes, they exist, the extremely successful originals, like “Stranger Things” (Netflix) or “Shōgun” (Disney+). And the vast majority of streaming content is available exclusively from one provider. But apparently very few viewers want to see them.
This is the conclusion reached by Gracenote’s 2024 “State of Play” report. The data analysis service examined content from the leading subscription video on demand (SVOD) services.
SVOD services rely on exclusive content, but non-exclusive licensed titles attract more
According to this, 93 percent of the content on global SVOD services is exclusive to a single service, but much of it is not seen. Licensed titles reach almost twice as many users as originals. Most of these viewership numbers are due to non-exclusive content.
Gracenote also analyzed when and where the content was produced. Less than 12 percent of SVOD titles were created before 1990, and over 80 percent are no older than 35 years. The top dog, the USA, is now facing increasing competition: only 44 percent of series and films were produced in the USA.
And the most popular genre? According to the report, this is drama. The most common mood in SVOD content: tension.
