The American alpine queen Lindsey Vonn will make a comeback at the age of 40, she says in an interview with the New York Times.
The attempt at a comeback comes after a five-year absence, and already this weekend Vonn will join the American Alpine National Team in Colorado.
“My goal is to enjoy it and hopefully do World Cup races. I wouldn’t return to the national team if I didn’t have a plan for it,’ says Vonn.
“I have ambitions. I love to drive fast. But how fast can I go? I don’t know that’.
In the interview, Lindsey Vonn also does not rule out participation in the 2026 Winter Olympics, which will be held in Cortina, Italy.
The U.S. national team has also confirmed that Vonn will join five years after the suspension.
“Lindsey has left a historic mark on alpine skiing and our organization throughout her career. We are delighted to be able to welcome her back”, says the USA’s skiing director, Sophie Goldschmidt.
“Her dedication and passion for alpine skiing is inspiring, and we are excited to get her back on the snow and see what she can achieve.”
In February 2019, Vonn ended her career with a World Cup bronze medal in the final race.
When she put her skis on the shelf, it was as the most winning woman in the World Cup context with 82 race victories. It has since been surpassed by Mikaela Shiffrin, who is on 97 World Cup victories across disciplines. In addition, Vonn has won three Olympic medals, eight World Cup medals and the overall World Cup four times.
It was particularly problems with the right knee that forced Vonn to end her career. Earlier this year, the American went through a major knee operation, where she got a new knee.
