Since September 16, i.e. yesterday, it has been possible for iPad owners living within the European Union to use alternative app stores after updating to version 18 of iPadOS. From now on, the company also offers the possibility to install browsers based on third-party engines.
According to the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which came into effect on March 7, iPadOS must comply with a number of rules that allow European users to download applications from sources other than the App Store. downloading and uninstalling pre-installed apps on iPad. Although the number of iPadOS users did not reach the DMA threshold, the Commission still classified it as an essential platform service, as it is an important gateway for business users to reach end users.
During the investigation, the committee found that Apple locked iPadOS users into the platform’s ecosystem, and the number of business users exceeded the amount needed to cross the gatekeeper threshold by “eleven times”, while the number of end users was “closer to the threshold”, but expected to grow will in the near future.
