AltStore PAL Offers Third-Party Apps on iPhones in the EU

Since April, thanks to the Digital Markets Act (DMA) legislation, developer Riley Testut has launched an alternative version of AltStore as an app marketplace for iOS users in the European Union. Initially, AltStore PAL only offered apps developed by Testut, but now users can find also third party apps on the store.

Third Party Apps Now Available on AltStore PAL

As announced on the official account Mastodon AltStore, AltStore PAL version 2.1 allows users to add sources to download apps from other developers. By default, users will find four additional apps available for download through AltStore PAL:

  • UTM SE: A virtual machine for running Windows and Linux (also available on the App Store).
  • qBitControl: An app to manage the desktop version of qBittorrent directly from your phone.
  • iTorrent: A torrent client for iOS.
  • PeopleDrop: An app to find other people nearby using geolocation.

Users can add additional sources to AltStore PAL, and recommended sources will also be able to add more apps in the future. AltStore says it has “explicitly reviewed” recommended apps to ensure they follow security standards.

In addition to these apps, AltStore PAL offers Delta – a popular retro console emulator also available on the App Store – and a clipboard manager called Clip.

With AltStore PAL, iPhone users can download apps that are not allowed on the Apple App Store. For example, Apple bans torrent apps, but now users in the EU can get those apps through alternative marketplaces.

AltStore PAL requires an iPhone with iOS 17.4 or later and is only available to users in the European Union. A subscription of €1.50 per year is required to cover the fees charged by Apple.

Subscribers can upgrade to the latest version at no additional cost by going to Settings > App Installation.
