Amazon brings new Kindles: color display, writing function and fresh colors

E-readers for every need

Just in time for the Frankfurt Book Fair, Amazon has renewed its Kindle lineup. The newcomers include a model with a color display for the first time.

Other highlights in addition to the colored Kindle Colorsoft include the redesigned Kindle Scribe, which promises a paper-like display and writing experience, a new Kindle Paperwhite with 25 percent faster page turning and the compact Kindle model, which is now also available in the trendy color matcha green.

Kindle Colorsoft: Covers and images in color

The Kindle Colorsoft is the first Kindle model with a color display. Book covers, illustrations and images should appear in vibrant, natural colors as if on paper. Amazon uses the latest technology for this: an oxide backplane ensures high contrast and fast loading times.

According to Amazon, the Kindle Colorsoft also offers a new light guide with nitride LEDs, which, in combination with in-house algorithms, improves color and increases brightness without blurring details. This allows images to be enlarged without loss of quality.

Despite the higher display requirements, Amazon promises a battery life of up to eight weeks. Thanks to the waterproof housing, the Colorsoft with 32 GB of memory can also be used in the bathtub or on the beach. The Colorsoft also supports wireless charging. Sounds promising!

Kindle Scribe: reading and writing combined

Like its predecessor, the new Kindle Scribe is not just for reading, you can also use it as a digital notebook. The newcomer’s display is surrounded by a white frame and offers a paper-like texture. The resolution is 300 ppi, so you can expect a razor-sharp display. New is the premium stylus, which offers the weight and balance of a real pen. Thanks to the soft eraser, corrections can be made quickly.

With “Active Canvas” annotations can be written directly on the current page. According to Amazon, the note is connected to the text and flows around it dynamically. Even if you change the font size or book layout, the note stays in the designated place.

Kindle Paperwhite: more speed, more contrast

The best-seller in the Kindle range is getting a speed update: Amazon promises that pages can be turned up to 25 percent faster and that scrolling through the library and shop will be much faster.

The new 7-inch display uses an oxide thin-film transistor, which, according to the manufacturer, enables the highest contrast ratio of all Kindle devices. And although the newbie is the thinnest Paperwhite yet, Amazon promises a runtime of up to 3 months. The Paperwhite is still waterproof and has 16 GB of storage in the standard version. The Paperwhite is now available in black, jade green and pink available from 169.99 euros.

The Paperwhite Signature Edition offers significantly more comfort in crucial areas: for an additional charge of 30 euros, the display lighting automatically adapts to the ambient light. The Paperwhite also offers a whopping 32 GB of storage and can be charged wirelessly. The colors available are black metallic, jade green metallic and pink metallic.

Kindle: Compact, cheap and often in matcha green

With a 6-inch screen and a weight of 158 grams, the most compact e-reader in the range can be easily stowed away, even in your trouser pocket if necessary – if you’re not wearing skinny jeans. The screen has a resolution of 300 ppi, offers better contrast and allows faster page turning.

The front light can be adjusted manually and, when fully turned up, shines up to 25 percent brighter than that of its predecessor. 16 GB of memory and weeks of battery life characterize the affordable entry-level model: The Kindle is the cheapest model in Amazon’s e-reader cosmos. It’s available in black and matcha green now available from 109.99 euros.

Kindle Kids and Kindle Paperwhite Kids: For the young

Especially for children, Amazon Kids offers models with colorful covers and access to the Amazon Kids+ software platform, which offers thousands of age-appropriate books and audio books.

The new, compact one Kindle Kids is available with a space whale, ocean explorer or unicorn valley themed case and costs 129.99 euros.

The waterproof one Kindle Paperwhite Kids comes for 179.99 euros with a case in a deep sea or cyber skyline design.

Both models come with a 2-year worry-free guarantee. In other words: If the reader is defective, Amazon will replace it. Six months of Amazon Kids+ are also included.
