Currently, the electric car market is growing at breakneck speed, despite a small decline in Europe in 2024. And even companies are now turning to this engine, pushed by the government which wants to tighten the screws once again. this subject. And that’s not all, because electric heavy goods vehicles have also become increasingly important in recent years.

A particularly massive order

Many manufacturers have launched into this segment, and companies are following suit by adopting this engine for their fleets. Several American companies have opted for the Tesla Semi, like Pepsico, which was one of its first customers. But in this market too, competition is tough, and Elon Musk’s firm is not the only one to sell such electric trucks. And some large companies are choosing to opt for rival models.

The real range of Tesla’s electric truck exceeds all expectations: here are the details of this record

This is for example the case of Amazon, which already has a very large fleet of Mercedes eActros 600 to ensure its deliveries. In fact, it has just received 38 new copies, which are added to the 50 recently deployed in California. And that’s not all, because the company founded by Jeff Bezos has just announced that it has placed the largest order for electric trucks in its history in a communiqué just published on its official website.

These are therefore not no less than 200 copies of German heavy goods vehicles which were purchased by the online sales giant, in order to join the fleet in the coming months. With this massive order, which is quite simply the largest ever made in its history for this type of vehicle, Amazon wants to make its deliveries greener. She announces that she should be able to deliver 350 million packages each year without using a drop of fuel.

This initiative is part of the company’s ambition to achieve zero emissions by 2040. But the adoption of electric trucks will not be the only means used to reduce its carbon footprint. Indeed, Amazon also plans toadapt the routes for deliveries, but also to partner and collaborate with public authorities in order to develop the network of charging stations.

Great autonomy

This new fleet of electric heavy goods vehicles will be responsible for making deliveries not in the United States, but in Europe, and more precisely in Germany and the United Kingdom. At the same time, Amazon and its partners also have no less than 3,000 electric vans signed Rivian, a number which should increase by 10,000 by the end of the year. In addition, the company also has electric cargo bikes, particularly used in large cities such as Rome, Paris and London.

But back to the eActros 600. Why did Amazon choose this vehicle? Well the latter has the particularity of having a particularly generous autonomy, since it is announced at 500 kilometers approximately in a single charge. And this is thanks to its huge LFP (lithium – iron phosphate) battery with a capacity of 600 kWh, while it can be recharged from 10 to 80% in just 30 minutes. All at a power of 400 kW in direct current.

For this, Amazon plans to install on its key sites new charging stations reaching 360 kWin order to ensure rapid charging which allows the vehicle to quickly leave for delivery. The latter was chosen over the Tesla Semi which is not yet sold in Europe, while competition is becoming increasingly fierce. We think, for example, of the Man eTGX that we tested, but also of Renault Trucks, which is also investing in the electric tractor and truck segment.
