Amazon does not intend to watch as OpenAI, Google and Meta invest huge resources in the development of generative artificial intelligence. The giant also wants to take advantage of this trend and is investing billions of dollars for this purpose.
Amazon today announced an investment of an additional $4 billion in Anthropic, creator of one of the most advanced LLM models – Claude AI. In total, the giant has already invested $8 billion in this partnership in recent months, becoming a major provider of cloud services, and now also hardware. Tightening cooperation will enable the integration of Anthropic’s advanced AI models with AWS services, including the use of AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips to train LLM models. The goal is to improve the performance, security and privacy of AI services offered to customers. Anthropic will focus on providing Claude models that customers can customize to their needs using Amazon Bedrock.
Alexa with Claude AI support
Amazon also plans to use Anthropic’s technology in its Alexa voice assistant, which will increase its generative abilities and interactivity. In internal tests, the assistant powered by the Claude AI model performed significantly better than the product developed by Amazon’s internal team. The integration of this technology aims to improve Alexa’s functionality, which can bring significant benefits to end users. The future of Alexa has recently been a big question mark, but it seems that thanks to cooperation with Anthropic, the possibilities of this service will significantly increase.
The new version of Alexa powered by Claude AI should debut in 2025. Thus, Amazon will join the competition with OpenAI and Google for good. These two companies currently seem to be the most advanced in creating and using generative artificial intelligence. However, they largely rely on solutions provided by NVIDIA, which are unfortunately expensive. Amazon intends to approach this issue a bit differently, and together with Anthropic it will also work on the development of its own chips supporting learning and the use of artificial intelligence. The next generation of Trainium and Inferentia systems may therefore be much better and better suited to the needs of the Claude AI model. This holistic approach could provide an advantage, provided that Amazon’s hardware solutions are actually competitive.
