The Pico 4 Ultra will be released on September 20. This new virtual reality headset, which aims to be a competitor to the Meta Quest 3, can already be pre-ordered on Amazon, which is offering it at 599 euros instead of 678.99 euros.
Announced at the end of August by the ByteDance brand, the Pico 4 Ultra virtual reality headset is about to arrive on the French market. Heir to the Pico 4, this model represents a real upgrade: more powerful processor, new binocular system, major updates to the Pico OS operating system… In short, this new VR headset has everything to be a serious competitor to the Meta Quest 3. And if it is not yet officially released, it is already possible to pre-order it, and with a little extra promotion.
The Pico 4 Ultra in a few points
- A Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor + 12 GB of RAM
- A binocular system with two sensors
- Wirelessly stream content from a computer or Android device into virtual windows
The Pico 4 Ultra VR headset will be available for €678.99 when it is released on September 20 on Amazon. But it is currently possible to pre-order at 599 euros on the site. For the purchase of the Pico 4 Ultra, Motion Trackers as well as four games (Blade & Sorcery: Nomad, Infinite Inside, Let’s Get Fit VR and FootPool) will be offered.
A VR headset that comes close to the Meta Quest 3
The new Pico 4 Ultra virtual reality headset is anything but a simple refresh of its predecessor, the Pico 4. First, it adopts a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor, while its predecessor only had the first generation of the chip. This is also the same processor found in the Meta Quest 3, its main competitor. It even surpasses it in one point: its RAM, which is 12 GB here, compared to 8 GB for the Meta Quest 3. Thus, the Pico 4 Ultra should benefit not only from a good power boost, but also from a very fluid experience, especially on multitasking.
Another strong point of the Pico 4 Ultra: the presence of a binocular system with two 32-megapixel sensors, instead of the monocular camera that equipped the Pico 4. A definite leap forward for mixed reality, where the virtual is superimposed on the real, but be careful: the headset actually uses the pixel binningwhich combines the information of 4 pixels into 1 to obtain an image of 8 megapixels. Thus, the manufacturer announces an angular resolution of 20.6 pixels per degree (PPD) for the passthrough (i.e. display reality in the headset), compared to 18 PPD for the Quest 3. Immersion should therefore be much better during mixed reality experiences.
Major updates
This VR headset obviously benefits from the Pico OS operating system, which will receive notable updates, such as the ability to freely position windows in space, like the Apple Vision Pro, in short. The Pico 4 Ultra is therefore not just reserved for gaming, but also for work and productivity, for example. Add to that the ability to wirelessly stream content from a PC, Mac, iPhone or even an Android device into virtual windows.
Finally, regarding its main features, note that the Pico 4 Ultra has a field of vision of 105° x 105°, a quality of 2,160 × 2,160 pixels per eye as well as a refresh rate of 90 Hz. The battery is located at the back of the headset, which guarantees a better balance, and offers a capacity of 21.9 Wh. Special mention for the charging speed, which surpasses that of the Meta Quest 3: 45 W for the Pico 4 Ultra against 20 W. It is therefore theoretically possible to fully recharge the headset in less than an hour.
