Ambassador: If they attack NATO, this Russian region will be eliminated first

Russia has been terrorizing neighboring Ukraine for more than two years, and during this time there have been repeated speculations about a possible attack by Vladimir Putin on one of the NATO member states. This threat was not only heard in the context of Russian propaganda debates, but some Kremlin officials themselves have issued similar warnings. Duma deputy Alexei Zhuravlyov recently suggested moving Russian nuclear weapons closer to the US and previously spoke of a possible attack on Poland as part of the “next phase of the war”. Lithuanian Ambassador to Sweden Linas Linkevicius warned Vladimir Putin on the X platform, stressing that the possible idea of attacking NATO in the Baltic Sea region would have serious consequences for Russia. According to him, the Baltic Sea became “NATO’s internal sea” after Hungary agreed to Sweden’s entry into the military alliance.

The final hurdle to Sweden’s entry into NATO was recently overcome when the Hungarian parliament approved the ratification of the country’s entry. However, joining NATO will require the unanimous support of all alliance members, and Hungary has so far been the last to resist the move.

Linkevicius made it clear what Putin’s expected response could be in the event of an attack in the Baltic Sea in his comments on the social network X. The first step, according to the Swedish ambassador to Lithuania, would be to “neutralize” the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. “What were once considered false accusations of Russia being encircled by NATO is now becoming a reality,” Linkevicius added.

The Russian fleet is based in Kaliningrad, which is the westernmost region of the Russian Federation. Kaliningrad is separated from Sweden by the Baltic Sea, and the Swedish island of Gotland is almost 300 kilometers from the coast of Kaliningrad.
