Ragweed is an unusual weed, and we all know this plant well because it is one of the main causes of allergies. For those who suffer from an allergy to this weed, the pain has been going on for a long time, and forecasts say that it will not end until October. Have we exhausted all possible solutions to ease the discomfort? Doctor Radišić suggests one that has been proven to help.
Ragweed will potentially be a problem well into October
August and September are the months of dominance of one of the most powerful allergens – ragweed pollen. This is best felt by those citizens who spend those months almost all the time “under a glass bell” due to pronounced symptoms.
The red color on the “allergy traffic light” is active all the time, and monitoring shows that the last day was the peak of pollinating plants. The rain calmed down the pollen for a while, but the first next warm day will be a problem for people who have problems with allergies.
“There is no washing of pollen from the air by rain, or there are no lower temperatures, so ragweed has remained in the air almost since August last year, we don’t know how the weather will develop, we expect that this year will be very difficult at least until 20 . in September, and if the weather stays warm, it can be extended until October,” says Predrag Radišić, head of the palynology laboratory.
Since the middle of August, pediatric clinics, waiting rooms of general practice, otorhinolaryngology and emergency medicine have been full of patients with violent allergic symptoms, and it will be like this, as they say in the Clinical Center of Vojvodina, until October.
AMBROSIA: HOW TO RECOGNIZE AND ERADICATE IT!
“They are scared, they often have stuffy noses, itching, sneezing, secretions, changes on the skin, and sometimes they also have difficulty breathing, which is manifested by tightness in the chest,” points out doctor Maja Buljčik Čupić from the Clinic for Otorhinolaryngology.
In addition to genetic predisposition, stress and various viruses are the main triggers for allergic disease, men and women are equally susceptible to it, says doctor Maja Buljčik Čupić and adds:
“There are periods during life during hormonal imbalances, such as puberty or menopause, when, due to certain actions in the body, a significantly more violent allergic reaction occurs, even some recent research shows that during the menopause period, the first allergic symptoms occur, that it is the trigger for the appearance of allergic reactions”, states
Doctor Buljčik Čupić advises all people with an allergy to the flowering of ragweed and other weeds, if antihistamines and corticosteroids do not relieve their symptoms, to contact a specialist to prescribe immunotherapy, which must be started in the winter, at least 12 weeks before the pollen allergy season. , which showed high efficiency in the treatment of allergies, “RTV” reports.
How to fight allergy symptoms
Monitor the pollen forecast: Check the pollen forecast for your area regularly to stay aware of the pollen levels in the air. When pollen levels are high, you can take appropriate measures to protect yourself. You can follow this forecast on the website of the Environmental Protection Agency
Avoid exposure to pollen: Try to avoid exposure to pollen as much as possible. Keep windows closed during the day when pollen is most concentrated in the air, be sure to use an air conditioner with an air filter to reduce indoor pollen intake, and avoid outdoor activities, especially on warm days when pollen is more present in the air.
Shower more often and change your clothes: Shower regularly to remove pollen from your skin and hair, and change your clothes after being outdoors to prevent pollen from entering your home.
Use anti-allergy preparations: Preparations/medications/spray are products that can alleviate the symptoms of pollen allergy, such as sneezing, itching, stuffy nose and red eyes. You can buy them without a prescription, but consultation with a doctor is recommended.
Wear a protective mask: Wearing a protective mask can help you reduce the intake of pollen in your nose and mouth while outdoors.
Use eye spray: Anti-allergy eye spray will reduce redness, itchy eyes, tears and other discomforts caused by an allergic reaction to pollen.
Use clinically tested preparations: If your doctor has diagnosed you with a pollen allergy, he can prescribe appropriate preparations. If you take the preparations yourself at the pharmacy, make sure that serious research has been done and that the preparation has been clinically tested.
