The architecture and video card presentation hardly even scratched the surface, but as an expected detail, the company said that it will bring FSR 4 scaler using artificial intelligence to the Radeon RX 9070 video cards.
As expected, AMD has held its own presentation at the CES 2025 fair today. Several new processors were seen at the event, and the first taste of future RDNA 4 architecture graphics cards was given.
Unfortunately, the first tasters of the RDNA 4 architecture did not reveal any more precise details about the architecture. According to AMD, it has optimized the architecture’s Compute Units with changes that significantly improve IPC and clock frequency, radically improved AI computing and increased its functionality, enhanced ray tracing per CU, and improved media unit encoding quality.
The circuits are manufactured using a 4 nanometer class process and use 2nd generation AI accelerators, 3rd generation ray tracing accelerators and 2nd generation AMD Radiance Display Engine display driver. In the speculations, it has been assumed that RDNA 4 will bring with it the Matrix Core matrix crushers known from the CDNA side, but at least there is nothing directly referring to it in the slides. RDNA 3’s WMMA support was also referred to as AI accelerators.
According to preliminary information, there are two circuits based on the RDNA 4 architecture, the first covers the Radeon RX 9070 series and the latter covers the RX 9060 series, which will be released later. According to AMD, the reason for the naming change is an easier comparison with the competitor; The RX 9070 models are therefore supposed to compete with NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4070 and 4070 Ti graphics cards. Jumping over the 8000 series is explained by the new architecture, as graphics controllers based on the RDNA 3.5 architecture will be seen as 8000 series in Strix Halo processors. Another logical reason is, of course, that the company already had Radeon 9700 graphics cards. The Radeon RX 9070 XT will rank roughly at the level of the Radeon 7900 XT in terms of performance. The Radeon RX 9070 models will go on sale in the first quarter of the year.
Regardless of what the artificial intelligence accelerators are this time, AMD is also bringing them a use. Like DLSS and XeSS, FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 or FSR 4 is based on machine learning and it utilizes the artificial intelligence accelerators of the RDNA 4 architecture. FSR 4 is only limited to the new Radeon RX 9070 series graphics cards at least at this point, but presumably support will also come to the RX 9060 graphics cards that will be released later. FSR 4 will apparently work directly with all games that support the previous FSR 3.1 version.
The company also said that it will update AMD Software with new Adrenalin AI features. The AI tab allows you to directly create, for example, images and summaries of local documents, in addition to which you can ask the chatbot questions related to AMD’s products and guidance on, for example, the features of new graphics cards and their implementation.
