AMD Radeon RX 9000: name change for new graphics cards

rumor

AMD will soon introduce the RDNA 4 GPU generation. The specific chip names should differ from the previous naming scheme.

AMD is about to introduce its latest generation of graphics cards based on the RDNA 4 architecture. Surprisingly, the new models will come onto the market under the name Radeon RX 9000 instead of the expected RX 8000. Then, within the next generation, a performance gradation will no longer be in second place, but in third place: for example, Radeon RX 9070 instead of the expected 9700.

The At least insiders claim (via Videocardz) with initial confirmations from manufacturers. This name change could be a strategic decision to simultaneously establish parity with the Ryzen 9000 processors.

The Radeon RX 9000 series is expected to be presented at CES 2025 and offers a number of technical innovations. The cards are said to feature the advanced RDNA-4 architecture, which promises improved energy efficiency and higher performance. Compared to the previous models in the RX 7000 series, which were based on RDNA-3, the new cards are expected to offer optimized graphics performance, but without addressing the high-end segment.

The first design leaks of the new cards show striking accents similar to the RDNA 2 generation. The RX 9000 series will come with three axial fans. The cards are said to be available in different models such as the RX 9070 (XT) or RX 9060, with each model having different specifications and performance features.

Exact prices and availability are not yet known. The RX 9000 series is expected to be available in the first quarter of 2025. AMD plans to position the cards on price-performance ratio to appeal to a broad user base.
