Millions of Americans are waking up today to snow and sub-zero temperatures as a major winter storm moves eastward across the US.
The US National Weather Service (NWS) has warned of severe weather conditions and “dangerously low temperatures”, writes the BBC.
The violent weather coincides with Congress in the United States having to meet and formally approve Republican Donald Trump’s election victory in November.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said Sunday that the weather will not prevent approval.
But federal offices in Washington DC will be closed, authorities have announced, according to the Reuters news agency.
“20 to about 35 centimeters of snow is expected from northern Missouri to the central Appalachians (mountain range, ed.)”, writes the NWS.
In addition, large amounts of snow are also expected in general in the Mid-Atlantic region between the northeastern and southeastern states and, among other things, include Washington DC
In Kansas further inland, just under 28 centimeters of snow fell, and in Kansas City it is the fourth largest snowfall in a single day, according to the weather service, according to the BBC.
Problems in several places in the world

Several major roads and rail links are closed and runways are closed at Manchester Airport. There are also reports of closed schools in north-east Scotland.
In Germany, heavy rain and melting snow due to milder temperatures have caused the river Mosel to overflow its banks in some places in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in western Germany.
Traffic problems are also being reported in southern Norway due to large amounts of snow.
