Who are the candidates?
Although several American parties nominated candidates, due to the peculiarities of the electoral system, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party are the most likely to delegate candidates to important decision-making positions this year.
Although the composition of the two chambers of the legislature is also changing, the main question is obviously who will be the next president:
the Democrats are running Kamala Harris, Vice President Joe Biden, the Republicans are running Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States.
What decides the choice?
In the United States, a so-called electoral system operates, which means that it is not who wins the presidential election that decides how many votes are cast for which candidate by citizens entitled to vote.
Each state can delegate a different number of electors, a total of 538 electors cast their votes for one or another candidate.
A candidate must obtain 270 electors to become president in January 2025.
What do the polls show?
According to opinion polls there will be a very fierce struggle in America:
it is practically impossible to predict who will win based on the polls.
National polls conducted in the last week of the election mostly show a narrow lead for Kamala Harris, but Trump leads by a hair in the majority of swing states.
When will the result be?
The first polling stations are expected to close at 1 a.m. Hungarian time, and the first (partial) results may start to arrive after that.
If all goes according to plan, who will be the 47th president of the United States could be decided as early as tomorrow morning.
The 2020 election was memorable for the fact that it was not possible to know who won for five days, as the tallying of postal votes took an extremely long time. Although the number of postal votes is still extremely high (more than 75 million people voted in advance), there is a good chance that the result will be faster.
