In the US presidential and congressional elections, 61.9 million people have already voted in advance, according to data from the University of Florida’s Center for Election Monitoring. In many states, the 2020 record for the number of votes cast before election day was broken. This year it falls on November 5, i.e. next Tuesday. Vice President Kamala Harris, who is the candidate of the Democratic Party, and Republican ex-President Donald Trump will compete for the White House.
In the Council of American States, voters have the option of voting in advance, either in person at a polling station or by mail.
In the last presidential election in 2020 amid the covid-19 pandemic, far more Democrats than Republicans voted by mail, partly because Trump falsely claimed that mail-in voting was unreliable.
However, this time, according to preliminary data, Republicans vote much more often in advance than four years ago. According to The Washington Post, Trump’s statements probably contributed to this. For example, in mid-October at a rally in Georgia, one of the seven key states, the Republican ex-president urged voters who received ballots to go to the polls as soon as possible. However, according to The Wall Street Journal, Democrats still vote more early than Republicans.
