An 88-year-old disabled man evicted from his home

An expulsion of an 88-year-old disabled retiree creates controversy in Bordeaux, at 48 bis rue Montfaucon. According to information from Rue 89 “Salem Rja was evicted from the accommodation he occupied on October 17 for late payment of several months’ rent.” However, a plan to clear its debts was validated in March.

On Facebook, Agnès, who witnessed the eviction of this octogenarian, even claims that he “regularized his rents in April”. According to her, “the owner launched legal action but once Mr. Rja paid what he owed, the owner let the action run without reporting it.”

A start of conflict over urgent work

Originally, the retiree had chosen to suspend the payment of his rent in order to obtain a reaction from the SAS Organization et Construction Twinée, owner of the property managed by the real estate agency Absolute Habitat, on urgent work to be carried out.

A standoff then began. After four months of unpaid rent, the agency requires him to regularize his situation before April 2024. Rue 89 recounts that he was for this “summoned to a public hearing at the local court on March 1 but did not appear, having been absent to see his sister in Morocco”, his native country left in 1972. The owner then requests termination of the lease and eviction.

The retiree, who cannot read or write, still managed, with the help of his neighbor, to have his owner accept a clearance plan on March 13, that is to say a program of reimbursement to avoid legal proceedings and thus remain in the apartment he has occupied since 2008. Since then, his neighbor has assured that everything has been “settled”.

The town hall gets involved in the matter

But things are not improving for this father of five children, who has lived alone since his divorce. A letter from the prefect dated August 28 confirms the termination of the lease with an eviction notice.

Faced with this affair, the Bordeaux town hall has stepped up to the plate. Harmonie Lecerf Meunier, deputy mayor responsible for access to rights and solidarity, promised to “urgently process” a request for integration into one of the city’s 15 independent residences. In the meantime, Salem Rja resides in a CCAS center, the municipal social action center of Bordeaux. According to Rue 89“he is currently admitted there until November 1, a period which can be renewed for another fortnight if no other solution is available to him.”
