After an intensive multi-day search, the Austrian police announced today that they found the body of the suspected murderer of two people, including the mayor of a municipality, who is believed to have committed suicide.
The suspect, believed to be in a hunting dispute, killed the mayor of the town of Kirchberg ob der Donau, which is located on the border with Germany and the Czech Republic, and a former hunting official within an hour and a half on Monday morning, after which he fled.
The police lost track of him until they found his car.
The suspect’s body was found in the middle of the day, regional police assistant Rudolf Keplinger said today at a press conference in Linz in the northeast of the country.
“The circumstances indicate that it was a suicide,” Keplinger said, adding that he was personally “relieved” even though the balance of this incident was three dead.
A police official said hundreds of police officers, supported by helicopters and drones, had been mobilized since Monday to search for the killer.
The suspect’s vehicle was found Friday in a forest in northern Upper Austria not far from the crime, which appears to be related to a hunting dispute.
Police then found the lifeless body of the 56-year-old suspect, whose identity was confirmed through fingerprint analysis, and an autopsy was ordered to confirm the cause of death.
