It arrives at the end of summer and could only convey joy: it’s called True Joy and it is the color of the year 2025 announced by the Dutch multinational AkzoNobelwhich is present on the Italian market with the paint brand Sikkens. After Sweet Embracethe mineral pink tone of 2024, the choice falls on a vibrant shade of yellowready to make us smile and flood the walls of our home with good vibes.

Supported by three complementary color palettesTrue Joy is the result of extensive research into colour, design, cultural, economic and social trends. For over 30 years, AkzoNobel’s Global Aesthetic Center has been translating trends into desirable colours for our homes. Its annual meeting on ColourFutures trend forecasts brings together international experts, architects, designers and journalists to analyse the data and choices that influence the world of colour. This year, for the first time, junior designers and interns were also involved, to ensure a wider age range.

“In this rapidly changing moment in history, it’s easy to feel uncertain about the future,” says Heleen van Gent, creative director of AkzoNobel’s Global Aesthetic Center. “But change creates an opportunity to imagine new scenarios, a chance to create something better. With our new Color of the Year and ColourFutures 2025 palettes, we want to inspire consumers to celebrate their roots and creativity, and to embrace optimism especially within their personal spaces.”

With Heleen we went behind the scenes of the color of the year, with some additional curiosities.

What inspired the new color of the year?

The Global Trend Forecast Meeting is held annually to gather information on the direction of global trends, but also to record the general mood of society. Our color experts at the Global Aesthetic Center translate this data into a color of the year and three complementary color palettes.
Our ColourFutures research project begins with our annual brainstorming session. To achieve a global and diverse perspective on life, our trend forecasting collaborators come from all over the world and cover a wide range of disciplines, from design, architecture, journalism to technology. The dominant sentiment that emerged during our brainstorming session was desire to reset, to get out of the bubble that surrounds us and start again, to welcome the new.
From here, the color of the year is selected, which encompasses all of this. Since everyone is affected by the mood of the moment differently, and since color is personal, three complementary color palettes are also created, to ensure that this color works for everyone, everywhere.
This year, we have registered a strong desire for liberation, that of pressing the reset button and embracing the new. We have looked for a nuance that would convey optimism, just by looking at the walls, and above all make people smile. To enclose all the inspirations that have guided us, we have chosen the name True Joywhich refers to a positive and unexpected color that helps us get out of our bubble.

Any suggestions for applying True Joy indoors?

True Joy can be used as an accent color or as a focal wall and you can create a wide range of new color schemes. In our roomsets, we have experimented with various ideas for its use, precisely to inspire people, to bring joy to their home and work spaces. Anyone can do it: if you dream it, you can create it, you just have to believe in it. We may not be able to change the world, but we can change our space. This is the mantra.
True Joy is a color that evokes adventure, discovery, it gives energy in its application. On a base of light neutralsyou can add a touch to compose a place that takes us pleasantly out of our comfort zone. For example, mix in a large living room orange and yellow along with colorful furnishings.
I also recommend the combination of True Joy with the shades of wood and clayenhances the materiality and artisanal process, allowing you to bring the beauty of imperfections into your home. In the wake of natural tones, there are also the raw and earthy nuances of one of our complementary palettes that can be combined with the color of the year.

But why the yellow color?

After years of little use, we see the color yellow emerges in all sectors, design, graphics, interiors, fashion. It’s the bold, energizing color we need. All kinds of yellow, from vanilla, to okra, to honey and everything in between. It makes you smile and now is the time to use it, without thinking too much. The world is in turmoil, we need to do something we can control, even if it is just painting our walls with such a bright and unconventional color.
