Google is known for taking away not only various functions in services, but also entire applications. Over the last few years, many interesting tools that users were happy to use have disappeared. One of them has just returned! And in a better version.
It’s no secret that Google likes to kill its products. There’s even a special page Graveyard – Killed by Google dedicated to all the services that have been “buried” by the American company in recent years. We will find quite a lot there – from instant messengers, through a travel service, to VPN, a cloud gaming service, or Chromecasts, popular in recent years, which will officially disappear from sale when their stocks run out. A few months ago, Google gave up one of the most interesting tools in its search engine – archived versions of websiteswhich allowed you to return to the state from a few weeks or months ago. Although this service did not make it to the Graveyard – Killed by Google page, it was completely erased from the search engine, where it was previously available for almost every link in the search results. Google quietly abandoned this function, and then quietly returned to it – and in a completely new, more advanced version.
Google is bringing back a major feature. It’s worth using it to see what the internet looked like in the past
Do you associate? Internet Archive? This is probably the most extensive library/archive collecting not only archive files but also screenshots of old websites. In Wayback Machinewhich is a digital time machine, we can visit, for example, the Apple home page long before the premiere of the first iPhone or Antyweb, when it was still a one-person blog. The American institution has just confirmed that Google has entered into cooperation with it, the aim of which will be to be able to view previous versions of websites in the search window.
Users around the world can now view archived versions of web pages directly through Google Search, using a simple link to the Wayback Machine. How do you use this feature? A three-dot icon (⋮) appears next to search results, which displays a panel with information about the page and additional tools. This is where you will be able to view it in the Wayback Machine and choose at what point in time you want to view the page.
It’s worth noting, however, that updating the browser with new features is done on the server side. And while the introduction of the ability to browse pages through the Wayback Machine is supposed to be available to everyone around the world, it may take some time before you see the feature on your computer.
